What is a Children's Disability Network Team?
A Children’s Disability Network Team (CDNT) is a team of healthcare professionals. The team works with children from the local area who have been identified as having complex needs, arising from a disability.

The team may be made up of:

  • Speech and Language Therapists,

  • Occupational Therapists,

  • Psychologists,

  • Physiotherapists,

  • Social Workers

  • As well as other professionals like Behaviour Support or Early Years specialists.

A family-centred service

The team works with children and their families to identify the priority areas they would like support with. This is to make sure that families are receiving support around the things that matter most to them and their children.

Individual Family Support Plan (IFSP)

The team might talk with you about goals that they think are important to work on to help your child’s development and participation at home, in school, and in the community. These goals are agreed and added to an Individual Family Support Plan (IFSP) which then becomes the plan of service for that child and family. The IFSP is used to guide the team’s work and is updated and changed over time.

Your child’s support network

The team works closely with the child’s support network which may include parents, caregivers, school, and community supports. This is in recognition of the fact that a child’s family is their first and most important teacher, and the greatest influence in their lives. We also work directly with children to identify what their strengths and needs are and to provide clinical supports.

Where we work

The team provides services in homes, schools, and in the community, as well as in the CDNT clinic. How we work will depend on the child’s needs and may include workshops, groups, or one-to-one sessions.  We may also support the family to include other supports in their lives, such as in their wider family network or community.

Family Forum

Each CDNT has a Family Forum, which meets several times a year. The Forum provides an opportunity for families to come together to discuss general issues and ideas about the services offered by your CDNT. Invitations to attend the Forums are sent out by the CDNT admin teams.

Each Family Forum has two elected family representatives who represent their views and issues at the Family Representative Group for our wider area (the CHO7 area which covers Dublin West, Dublin South, Kildare, and West Wicklow).

Two family representatives from the Family Representative Group are also supported to attend the CHO7 Progressing Disability Services (PDS) Governance Group.

For more information on children’s disability services in the Dublin South, Kildare, and West Wicklow area (CHO7), see this website www.cho7cdnt.ie which also includes information about national and local supports for parents and families. The website also includes universal supports that parents and families might find helpful – universal supports are resources designed to support all children and young people accessing a CDNT service.
