Our Services

Through offering a wide range of flexible programmes for infants and preschool children with developmental delay and learning difficulties, we pride ourselves on our capacity to respond to the specific needs of each individual entrusted to our care. The early services programme is available to children with developmental delay and/or an intellectual disability from birth up to six years of age. 

Designed to be parent-centred service, our home based infant stimulation programme gives parents access to the advice and guidance of a highly professional multi-disciplinary team. Stewarts preschool is a structured educational setting for children from the ages of two to five with developmental delay.

Additional services include a family support programme to assist in managing the child at home, and respite care.  Following the completion of the preschool programme and after consultation with their parents, the children are reassessed and then placed according to their own specific needs and abilities.

 

Infant Stimulation Programme

This programme is for children aged 0-3 years old. Following a referral, an assessment of the child with the parents is carried out by the children's services team.

The programme is then tailored to meet the needs of the child, and the family. It is based primarily on the portage early education programme, and concentrates on six areas of development: infant stimulation; self help; motor; socialization; cognitive; and language.

The home liaison teacher coordinates the programme in consultation with the family and with the support of other clinicians. Visits to the home are usually on a weekly basis where the home liaison teacher works with the child/parent in developing new skills.

 

Preschool

The preschool is located on the main Stewarts campus and caters for up to 18 children with varying degrees of intellectual disability. The purpose of the preschool is to provide supports to parents and services to children from approximately the age of two and half years up until school-going age.
 
The aim is to provide a preschool service which is appropriate to each child’s individual need. Each child has a person-centred plan which is developed with the child’s keyworker and parents/guardians. Along with the multidisciplinary team, the staff in the preschool support the child to develop in all aspects of their lives including cognitive, emotional, imaginative, social and physical aspects to the best of the child’s ability.
 

Integrated Preschool

The integrated preschool programme provides services for up to ten children with varying degrees of intellectual disability between the ages of two and five years.

The programme facilitates the children's integration into mainstream preschools in their own locality, assisted by a Stewarts staff who support both the child, their parents and the staff in the preschool. A senior team member, who is also a nurse, liaises with both the multi-disciplinary team in Stewarts about the child's progress and needs, and also the teachers in the schools, in offering support and advice. At present children are attending preschools in Clondalkin, Lucan, Palmerstown and Ballyfermot.

If the programme available in the local preschool does not suit the child's needs, they can return to the special preschool in Stewarts in consultation with their parents and clinicians.

Respite Services

We are committed to providing the highest quality of short-term respite breaks for all service users attending our Day Services. Respite breaks are in place to allow service users to stay in a community residence for an agreed period of time, generally no more than 1 week. 

A multi-disciplinary scoring system helps prioritise service users' respite needs. Referrals can also be accepted from individual service users and their families, as well as members of the multi-disciplinary team.

All respite breaks are preceded by home visits with the family and the relevant social worker. Any issues regarding needs, compatibility and resources are considered and discussed before an appropriate group and service becomes available. Our main aim within respite services is to ensure that there is an equal and transparent approach to respite admissions based on priority ratings.

 

Family Support

Within the Family Support Programme there is a philosophy of care which is to provide strategic support to families for evenings out, after school care and Saturday Club, in line with our mission statement. 

The three guiding principles which form the core of the philosophy of care of Family Support Services can be surmised as such:

  • Individualized services delivery driven by the unique strengths, needs, potential and expectations of each service user and their family.
  • Effective and accountable services that is evidence-based and which seeks significant and practical treatment and recreational gains in the lives of the individuals with intellectual disabilities. 
  • Positive approaches that emphasize skill building, relationships development, and recognition that all individuals can grow and change to succeed in life. 

Family Support aims to promote strategic interventions for high-dependency service users and their families at evening times, after school services and on Saturdays. Access to Family Support Services are organised via referral through our multi-disciplinary team and are prioritised using a priority rating system based on risk.

The activities within family support are predominantly group activities run on a one-to-one basis. Saturday Club is a weekly event for both children and adults in which they are encouraged to socialise through and participate in a variety of leisure activities. Adults have an opportunity to socialise with peers and broaden their experiences on evenings out, whether to the cinema, for a game of snooker or for a meal. Summer camps are also run through July and August, incorporating leisure activities for both children and adults.
